2009 AOH TOUR - 9 DAYS, 8 NIGHTS

 

30th January 2009
Evening
departure from airport and with airline of your choice to Shannon Airport, Ireland.
31st January
Arrive Shannon airport and meet your driver-guide and begin your journey north.  First stop Galway and a rest with some free time before continuing onwards to Derry. (City Hotel, Derry)
 1st February
Attend Bloody Sunday memorial service in Bogside, participate in the afternoon historic 37th commemoration march, dinner at Derry AOH Hall, evening on your own. (B) (City Hotel, Derry)   
 2nd February
This morning tour towards Grinan of Aileach and up towards Buncrana and onwards to Ballyliffin.  Continue north to the most northerly point in Ireland at Malin Head before returning along through Moville and some free time and onwards along Lough Foyle to Derry. (B) (City Hotel, Derry)
 3rd February
Leaving Derry we head for Donegal town and some free time there before onwards past Yeats Grave and through Sligo to the shrine of our lady Knock.  After our time here continue onwards to Castlebar and the national museum of Country living for a visit.  Continue to Westport for overnight. (B) (Westpoprt Plaza Hotel, Westport)
 4th February
A beautiful scenic drive around Clew Bay this morning through Newport and Mulranny and to Achill Sound and across to Achill Island, tour the Atlantic Drive to the village of Keel and around to the deserted Famine village.  Return to Achill sound and some free time for lunch before returning along Clew Bay and learning of Grace O’ Malley or Granuaile as she was know, Irelands famous pirate queen from the 1530’s.  Out to Croagh Patrick and the national famine monument before returning to Westport for the remainder of the day free.  5th February

Departing Westport and travel south to the city of Galway the gateway to the west and a rest stop and some free time.  Onwards then to the village of Aughrim and the site of the Battle of Aughrim, scene of one of the bloodiest battles in Ireland in the Jacobite – Williamite war in 1691.  Continue through the Midlands to county Tipperary and to the Rock of Cashel, once the seat of the Kings of Munster and then one of the most prominent ecclesiastical sites in Ireland in the 12th century.  From here the short drive to the town of Clonmel and your hotel for overnight.  6th February
This morning you travel over the Vee drive in the Knockmealdown Mountains to the heritage town of Lismore, views of Lismore castle, once home to Sr Walter Raleigh and Richard Boyle the physicist.  Onwards to Midelton and a visit to the Jameson Whiskey distillery and a tour of the factory.  Onwards then to Blarney and free time here to maybe visit the Castle or shop in the popular Blarney Woollen Mills.  Return then through Fermoy to Clonmel for overnight.  7th February
Some free time this morning in the town of Clonmel, laid siege to by Cromwell in 1650 and where heavy losses were inflicted on his troops.  The town eventually surrendering as they ran out of gun powder but the troops escaping during the night and the townspeople being spared because of the valour shown.  Onwards to Limerick and King Johns Castle and the Treaty stone before reaching Shannon for overnight.
